This is a secret that on some level you have always known, but maybe forgotten.
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret:
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
You may not know this, but your heart has a brain. The heart’s little brain can think, learn, remember and even sense our inner and outer worlds on its own. The human heart remembers events, even when it is no longer in the body of the person who experienced those events.
In tandem with the cranial brain, it gives us a potent neural network shared by both the heart and the brain.
According to recent research:
“The ‘heart brain’ is an intricate network of nerves, neurotransmitters, proteins, and support cells similar to those found in the brain proper… A sophisticated two-way communication occurs between the heart and the brain, with each influencing the other’s function.” (J. Andrew Armour, M.D. Neurocardiology)
How does this two-way communication happen?
The heart converts the language of the body, your emotions, into the electrical language of your nervous system, so that those messages can reach your brain.
In other words, it really is important to listen to your heart when it is trying to tell you something! This is not merely a flowery idea. It is real. Your heart brain is talking to you.
As important as the cranial brain is, it can’t speak to you with the wisdom that your heart brain can. Your heart is intelligent. It has a wisdom that allows you to experience deep intuition and to set in motion a course of self-healing through intention.
And in the realm of trauma healing, intention is everything. Set an intention to heal and your heart will lead you to all the information, people, and help you need to fulfill that intention. I personally know this to be true.
So, yes, absolutely… trust your heart. It’s smarter than you think.
